Communications and information technologies are transforming distance education as the full potential of existing technologies is explored and that of emerging technologies assessed. This paper discusses the ways in which these new technologies can be employed to create the virtual class and thereby expand and diversify access to education while simultaneously transforming the nature of the educational process.
